The data was collected using a questionnaire from 100 middle level managers from five manufacturing companies in and around Pune. Fifteen items in the questionnaire measured perceived fairness and utility with regards to performance appraisal system in their organization. The results show that there is a positive perception of performance appraisal with respect to fairness but a negative perception about its utility. This indicates that organizations should seriously address the issue of effectiveness of performance appraisal system.
