The Stock Market index which is also known as the Sensex is an indicator of our economy. It is called the sensitive index. At times its movement defies logic. This is because it reacts according to the sentiments of the investor. This is one of the factors which has given rise to a psychological science which hetps us understand how emotions of investors affect their decision making process. Behavioral finance is a study to understand why a rational investor makes irrational decisions. Basic financial theories of Capital Asset Pricing Model and Efficient Market Hypothesis are based on the investor being rational. But in the present market scenario these theories remain only of academic interest. Behavioral finance helps us understand the mind of the investor and the reasons for his illogical behavior. This paper wilt try to analyse some common irrational investment behaviors and theories of behaviora[ finance. An attempt is made to understand the various theories and their relation to the decision taken by the investor while making his portfolio. A descriptive research is undertaken to understand the behavioral finance behaviors among the salaried segment in the age group of 25 to 45 years. A quota sampling is undertaken on the basis of salary. A primary and secondary research is undertaken.
